On this rock I will build My church.  Matt. 16:18         One True Church

Is there only ONE true church?

How can someone believe that there is only ONE true church, when there are literally hundreds of religious groups today? This seems to be quite a controversial subject among religious people. After all, if there really is just ONE true church which one is it?

As always, if you care enough to find the answer to a Bible question, you must seek the answer from the Bible. Also it is essential that the Bible student remains objective and has a sincere heart (Acts 2:46; Ephesians 6:5; Colossians 3:22).

All churches that exist today were founded by someone and it is important to learn where the builder of a church received their authority. If an unscriptural builder founded a church, then it’s work is unscriptural. It has become a work of man and not Christ. This is the truth about ALL denominations.

Jesus said, Upon this rock I will build my church (Matthew 16:18). It is a fact that NO other church can be scriptural unless Christ founded it. A church founded by a human is human.

Is the church of Christ a denomination?

What denomination did the Apostles and the 3,000 saved on Pentecost belong to? (Acts 2:38-47) The answer is none!

The Bible states that they were added to something (Acts 2:41;47). What were they added to?

When we continue reading the book of Acts we find several scriptures that will provide us with the answer. One day Peter and John were speaking to a group of people (Acts 4:1) and were arrested and put in jail. Many of those who heard them believed (Acts 4:4). In Acts 5:11 we find the first use of the word church used. Then in verse 14 we are told that multitudes of men and women were added to their number.

In Acts 6:1-5, we read that the congregation in Jerusalem, approved Stephan as one of the seven, to assist the twelve. Then in verse 7 we learn that the church in Jerusalem was increasing as many priests were becoming obedient to the faith (learn more about this in the section on faith).

Luke records in Acts 9:31 that the church continued to increase in Judea, Galilee and Samaria. This statement  shows the fulfillment of the command of Jesus (Acts 1:8), and once again proves the church continued to grow. The Christians were persecuted and became scattered. Even after this persecution the early Christians continued preaching the Lord Jesus.

We read in Acts 11:21 that a large number believed and turned to the Lord in Antioch. This verse describes two separate acts, believing and then turning to the Lord (repentance). Once again in verse 24 Luke records that considerable numbers were brought to the Lord.

On their first missionary journey Paul and Barnabas traveled to Iconium and taught and preached. Act 14:1 records that a great multitude believed.

Acts 16 provides us with more news about the growth of the church. Verse 5 tells us that the churches were being strengthened and increasing in number daily.

When Paul arrived at Thessalonica (Acts 17) he proclaimed Jesus is the Christ and some of them were persuaded along with a great multitude.

With all of this evidence about the birth and the growth of the church, we must answer the question, what denomination did they join?

Were they Baptists, Methodists, Lutherns, Presbyterians or Pentecostals?  No, they were just Christians. (Acts 11:26; 26:28;          1 Peter 4:16)  They were never hyphenated-Christians. (I.E., Baptist-Christian)

All those who were added to the church in the book of Acts and the rest of the New Testament all became a part of the same church. This is the body of Christ, which is the Lord’s church (Ephesians 1:22,23 and Colossians 1:18,24). The same is true today for any who believe and become obedient to the faith. All who are saved become members of this body (Ephesians 5:23), the church, because the Lord adds them to it (Acts 2:47).

It is clear that who are saved DO NOT BELONG TO A DENOMINATION because there is only ONE church ever mentioned in the entire New Testament and that is the church of Christ (Romans 16:16).
