Worship in spirit and truth.  John 4:24                   Worship in the church

Worship in the church

  • Three kinds of worship...

One of the purpose of the church is to worship our Holy God.  If we desire to please God we must worship Him the way that pleases Him (Colossians 3:17).

In the New Testament we find three kinds of worship.  The first kind is ignorant worship.  When Paul arrived at Athens he found the people worshipping idols (Acts 17:23).  Sadly, we still find people who are guilty of ignorant worship.  Millions bow down to idols and images and follow religious practices in ignorance of the scripture.

The second type of worship found in the New Testament  is vain worship (Matthew 15:9).  This is the type of of worship that most people are guilty of today.  Yes, it is the Lord that they worship, but their worship is vain because it follows the traditions of man, instead of the teaching of the Bible.

The third type of worship found in the New Testament is true worship.  John 4:24 records thes words of Jesus, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship HIm must worship him in spirit and truth.  This is the only type of worship God will accept.  True worship is directed to God in spirit (humility) and in truth (as it is written).  Those who worship God must do so on His terms.

Five items of worship...

The New Testament provides us with examples of how the early church worshipped.

1)  They assembled to study.  Although it is important for Christians to study privately, it also required they study together (Acts 20:7).  Preaching is a type of teaching.

2)  They prayed (Acts 2:42).  It is prayer that give us th opportunity to speak to our Father in heaven.

3)  They sang praises.  There are two kinds of music one is vocal and the other mechanical.  What kind of music please God?  God asks only for vocal music in worship (Ephesiand 5:19; Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 13:15).  This eliminates mechanical music.  The early church praised God only with their voices.   God had not approved on musical instruments to be used in worship and was not added until hundreds of years later.

4)  They assembled to partake of the Lord's Supper.  Acts 20:7 provides us with this example.  Matthew 26:26-28 and 1 Corinthians 11 teaches us how and why we are to partake of this memorial to Christ.

5)  They gave their money.  1 Corinthians 16:2 and 2 Corinthians 9:7 provides us with examples.  Most churches today have no problem following this command, but fail to partake of the Lord's Supper every week.

Christians today are to worship according to the same pattern given in the New Testament.  It is very simple.  What type of worship do you give to God?
